John Herbst teaches
Introduction to Islam and Religions of the World 2 at JSRCC. He is from
New York City, where he worked for many years as a corporate tax
accountant before moving to Richmond to seek a PhD at Union Presbyterian
Seminary. He is ABD in Biblical Studies, and an ordained Baptist
minister.
Herbst's presentation looks at
Muslim depictions of the Crusaders, covering the period
from the Crusader conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 to its recapture in
1187. To discover Muslim views, Herbst works chiefly with first-hand books of
the day, most importantly
The Book of Contemplation by
Usama ibn Munqidh, and the travelogue of
Ibn Jubayr.
